Katanga and Conti receive fresh female students after Halls conversion

Fresh female students have started trooping into Unity Hall [Conti] and University otherwise known as Katanga Hall to seek accommodation on Campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for the first time.

Alumni of both halls have protested against the conversion of their Halls but their resistance has been unsuccessful.

They had earlier petitioned the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II who is also Chancellor of the institution and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to help their fight against authorities.

The alumni did all they could as they strengthened the fight with a massive demonstration in the capital of the Ashanti Region but authorities remained adamant and have since started admitting female students.

The issue has since generated a heated argument between management of KNUST and Alumni of both Halls leading to armed military personnel being deployed on campus to keep the situation under wraps.

However, on August 24 2018, a Kumasi High Court struck out an injunction application by alumni of both Halls seeking to restrain management of the university from converting the two male halls into mixed.

Justice Samuel Obeng Diawuo who presided over the case explained that the application came after the university had already allocated accommodation to students who had admissions and have started reporting.

He also added that granting the request by the plaintiffs will cause inconvenience for fresh students who had already secured accommodation at the University.

On Friday 24th August at the time MyNewsGh.com’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Syxtus Eshun visited the university, both fresh males and females were happily trooping into the newly converted halls to seek accommodation on campus.

This is the first time both halls are going to accommodate both males and females.

A fresh female student our correspondent spoke with said, “I can’t wait to see how real the experience is going to be inside there”.

Lead counsel of Katanga male Halls Stephen Asante Bekoe after the judgement said they will still proceed to the Supreme Court as he disagreed with the explanation given by the court for quashing the case.
