Ashanti Regional Communications Manager for the Electricity Company of Ghana has warned residents not to use power poles to display political and other social event posters.
Communications Manager issued the warning after witnessing a spike in the number of posters on electric poles going up and receiving complaints from members of the public.
Erasmus Kyere Baidoo said it was illegal to attach material to electrical infrastructure and said there are serious safety risks associated with the practice.
“There’s risk of falling, and if you attach the paraphernalia to our pole via drilling you could come into contact with live wires”, he said.
“As people climb up some of our assets, there’s potential that the wires could clash together and cause conductor movement.”
“Also, these electrical poles have codes on them and the posters tend to cover the codes that make it easier for us to locate faults and attend to them on time.”
“We get a number of calls through to advise us of signs being put up, then we have to go out and assess whether they’re dangerous,” he said.
“Where they do pose a danger, we’ll remove them immediately.”
“It does cause a drain on our resource base, when we could be out there doing much more meaningful work.”
Erasmus Kyere Baidoo said if residents repeatedly disobeyed requests not to use the power poles as campaign space, the issue would be escalated to the relevant authorities for action to be taken against culprits.
