Keta and Ketu Assemblies fail to elect Presiding Members

Keta, Oct. 31, GNA - Members of Keta and Ketu District Assemblies on Monday failed to elect new Presiding Members during their inauguration at Keta and Denu.

During the first round of voting at Keta, Mr Prosper Afealete, 32, a Political Scientist and assembly member of Lagbati had 36 votes as against 32 votes by Mr Senanu Dotse, 64, a retired teacher and assembly member for Anlo-Afiadenyigba.

In the second balloting, Mr Afealete had 40 votes and Mr Dotse had 28 votes, each of them failing to secure two-thirds of the votes cast to be elected.

At Denu, Togbe Weshigbe, 63 a Traditional Ruler had 48 votes and his opponent Mr Cephas Anago Yao, 51 an Engineer had 25 votes at the first balloting in the Ketu assembly. During the second round, Togbe Weshigbe had 47 votes and Mr Yao 28 votes.

Both assemblies have fixed next two weeks to elect their Presiding Members.

The Keta assembly has 69 members made up of 48 elected, four of them women and 21 government appointees while Ketu assembly has 80 members made up of 52 elected and 28 government appointees. Speaking at the inauguration of Keta assembly, Mr Kofi Ahiabor, Keta District Chief Executive called for their support to improve the living standards of the people.

Mr Justice Cudjoe, Ketu District Chief Executive said participation of the people at the grassroots in activities of the assemblies depended on their mobilization by the assembly members.
