The Alsatian dog that purportedly mauled a six-year-old boy, Bismark Adzie, to death on June 20, 2017 at New Amanful in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, has been killed.

The animal was killed by the Western Regional Office of the Veterinary Service after it was established that it posed serious threat to many people.

The dog, after allegedly killing the little boy, was quarantined and monitored by the Veterinary Service for about two weeks to establish whether it had rabies.

The dog was later released to its owner after it was established that it was free from rabies.

However, upon further investigations, it was found that the dog posed a serious threat to human life.

According to the veterinary officers, some domestic animals such as dogs tend to be hostile to human beings if they were caged for long time and not allowed to meet with people.

“The dog owner should have occasionally strolled with the dog on the street to socialize but with caution. In that case, the animal will become friendly with human beings,” they revealed.

The Service therefore ordered the owner, through the police, to return the dog to the Veterinary Service to be killed.

The process of killing the animal known as Euthanasia took place at the Regional headquarters of the Veterinary Service in Takoradi on Friday morning.

It was done by injection of a chemical known as ‘T61’ administered by the veterinary service personnel.

After the exercise, Dr Simon Gbene, the Acting Director of the Service in the Western Region, noted that it was the first time Ghana had killed an animal through Euthanasia though it is very common in the Western countries.

He cautioned dog owners, school authorities and the general public to be wary of dogs that could be very unpredictable.

He noted that the Veterinary Service would soon come out with new guidelines on dog possession and ownership in the country.

Residents of New Amanful, a fishing community in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region, were dumbfounded when news broke that the six-year-old boy in the area had been mauled to death by the dog under bizarre circumstances.

The unfortunate incident took place on the premises of the deceased’s school New Amanful D/A Methodist Primary School.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that the dog reportedly rushed from the owner’s residence to the nearby basic school to attack the class one pupil, who was playing with his colleagues on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

The victim, Bismark Adzi, died hours after being rushed to the Kwesimintsim Hospital.

The body of the victim was deposited at a private morgue at New Amanful while the police investigators took over the case.
