Killing of the late 3 Generals during the 1979 revolution was regretful - Nunoo-Mensah

A former Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters where the late General Akuffo was the Chief of Defence Staff, has questioned the benefits of the execution of some three army generals during the 1979 revolution.

Former President Jerry Rawlings has over the years insisted that, the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council necessarily needed to have executed Generals Afrifa, Acheampong, Utaka and other senior Military Officers in 1979 to save the country from implosion.

The AFRC was the government of Ghana from June 4, 1979 to September 24, 1979. The regime’s ‘House cleaning’ exercise against corruption led to the execution of Lt. Gen. Afrifa, Gen. Acheampong, Lt. Gen. Akuffo, Major Gen. E. K. Utuka and four other senior officers.

But speaking in an interview with Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.fm, the former Chief of Staff who served under the era, has said the reason why the late generals were killed did not serve its purpose.

The canker of corruption he explained has heightened and at a faster rate than it previously was. The pillar of the 1979 revolution former president Jerry John Rawlings he posited, looks back with regrets since the former generals were used as sacrificial lambs for a purpose not achieved.

‘’When I look at the level of corruption and evil in this country, I can confidently say that, the execution of the late generals was purposeless.

The level of corruption in Ghana today has heightened. These men were sacrificed for nothing. Corruption has increased in Ghana today. They died for nothing. They were killed for no reason because the reason for their killing has served no purpose.’’

‘’Former president Rawlings looks back with regrets because he feels what he stood for and did has not yielded any positive results,’’ he added.
