Kintampo Accident Baby’s relatives finally show up

Relatives of a baby who survived Wednesday’s fatal crash on the Kintampo-Tamale road have been found.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), said on Kumasi-based Kapital Radio that a woman showed up at the hospital Monday, claiming to be the baby's aunt.

The baby, who had been transferred to KATH from the Kintampo Government Hospital, is believed to have been brought alone with the suspicion that her mother might have perished in the accident.

The hospital authorities had earlier made public appeals to help identify the surviving baby.

The aunt has not been allowed to take the baby away yet, as more need to be done to establish the fact that indeed she is related to the baby.

“We have a Social Welfare Unit at the hospital that handles such matters. And there are certain things that they go through. For example, you will need more family members to corroborate what this lady has told us and they would also ask for some documentary evidence,” Mr. Frimpong told the station.

Father of the victim, Mr. Frempong said, is expected at the hospital premises latest by the close of today, to help in identification.

According to him, the patient cannot be taken away from the hospital in her current state.

Meanwhile, the other eight survivors of the accident that were transferred to KATH are also stable and responding to treatment.

Management of KATH and Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) yesterday went round the various wards to pay a visit to the victims who had been transferred to the hospital.
