Kofi Adda supports flood victims with 5K, other relief items

Member of Parliament (MP) for Navrongo Central, Joseph Kofi Adda, has made a donation of GhC5,000 and a pledge of relief items to displaced residents and bereaved families affected by the rainfall-related disasters in the Manyoro area.

The donation, he said, is to support provide the urgent needs of the flood victims and the bereaved families as government, his Office and the Municipal Assembly work on finding permanent solutions to their difficulties.

Speaking at Manyoro Sunday when he joined the Vice President in a government delegation to sympathize with the flood victims and bereaved families, the MP who doubles as Ghana’s Aviation Minister, cried the extend of devastation the disaster has caused the community.

He urged the people to be strong amidst their difficulties and reiterated his commitment and the government’s, to ensure that Manyoro and all other affected communities bounce back to full active life.

Mr. Adda joined the Chiefs and people of Manyoro to thank President Akufo Addo, Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia and the government delegation for taking the time to visit the affected communities in his jurisdiction and to help wipe their tears.

He also thanked the Akufo Addo led government for the numerous life-changing interventions and projects brought to Manyoro.

The MP added his voice to calls by the chiefs and appealed to government to give maximum support to Manyoro and its people to help them recover from the aftermath of the rains.

Mr. Addaused the opportunity to announce efforts being undertaking by his Office to extend electricity to the remaining suburbs of Manyoro such as Wanjaginia and Gumongo and other communities.

“Your excellency, I stand here today to play two roles. If you permit me, I will pull myself away from your delegation briefly to join the chiefs and people of this area to thank you, the president, the delegation and my colleague ministers for coming here to sympathize with us. We are really very grateful for what you’ve been doing for us here in Manyoro. You gave us a dam, electricity and other beautiful projects”.

“I will like to announce to the people of this area that we are bringing some more electric poles and cables. They are all set to come to draw the light from here to Wanjaginia and Gumongo and other communities”.

“I’m also joining them to add my voice to the voice of the chief that our basket is really very big so we are expecting a lot of big things. So I will take the lead in putting something small. Immediately, I have some GHC5,000 to give them. Whatever I have to add to what NADMO is bringing, I will bring that later”,Mr. Adda assured.

Vice President donates on behalf of government

The Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the government delegation the region, announced that government will assist victims, bereaved families and the affected communities with several relief items.

He, on behalf of government, made a cash donation of GHc50,000 to support authorities in the region provide the immediate needs of the flood victims.

Dr. Bawumia further bemoaned the inability of buildings to stand the adverse weather conditions, blaming the use of poor quality materials fortheir construction.

He therefore appealed to the residents to ensure there is the right amount of building material when putting up their houses to make them stronger to withstand such harsh weather conditions as was experienced this season.

He also tasked the MMDCEs to find permanent solutions to the recurrent floods in the area which continue to take precious live and destroy property.

Visit to Tono Dam

Dr. Alhaji Bawumia climaxed his tour with a visit to the Tono irrigation dam where he assessed the extent of damage the torrential rains caused the spillway servicing the dam.

There, management of ICOUR led by Operations Manager, Sebastian Bagina, showed and explained to him the damages to the retaining walls and floor of the spillway. Dr. Alhaji Bawumia pledged government’s commitment at fixing it in the shortest possible time to maintain the legacy of the Tono Dam.

“As you already know, government is taking giant steps to address the perennial flooding that occurs in the Northern regions as a result of the spillage from the Bagre dam. We will soon commence works on the Pwalugu multipurpose dam to provide irrigation for about 25,000 hectares of farmlands, drinking water and also check flooding. With this and the Tono dam we will be able to cover large tracts of land for farming in the north and so we will do everything to ensure the Tono dam is in good shape to serves its purposes”, he assured.

The government delegation included Hon. Joseph Kofi Ada, Minister for Aviation and MP for Navrongo Central, Hon. Ambrose Dery, Minister for the Interior and MP for Nandom, Hon. Salifu Saeed Northern Regional Minister and acting Upper East Regional Minister, Director General and Regional Director of NADMO. The delegation was joined in the region by MMDCEs of all the affected areas.
