Awoonor earned his doctorate from New York's Stony Brook University and was a professor of literature there in the 1970s. He served successful terms as Ghana's ambassador to Brazil and other South American countries and Cuba. As Ghana's ambassador to the United Nations, he served as chairman of the anti-apartheid committee in the critical years of 1990 to 1994 during the transition to democracy in South Africa
