Some youth in the Kofigya community in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region on Wednesday accused the Odikro (chief) of the town, Nene Ador Anonger of not initiating any development project to help improve the standard of living in the town.

A cross-section of the youth, who pleaded anonymity, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the town lacked many social amenities, and that, the Odikro was rather interested in leading opinion leaders of the town to negotiate with the municipal assembly for the construction of road ramps.

According to the youth, the community lagged social amenities like potable water, refuse dump site, additional public toilet, schools and community/social centre for recreation.

When contacted, Nene Anonger, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Suhum – Accra Branch Office of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), explained that there had been an increase in the number of residents being knocked down by vehicles and therefore, there was the need to construct the ramps, saying that, more of such ramps would be constructed soon in the town.

The Odikro explained further that he provided a land for the construction of a school block from class one through to Junior High School, but said other landowners declined to offer pieces of lands for other social amenities.

“The over 700 inhabitants need schools, public toilets, potable water and refuse dump site”, he confirmed, adding that, “series of meetings with landowners to release lands for these amenities have not yielded results”.

He told the GNA that it was true that due to lack of toilet facilities in the town, some of the people defecated along the streets and around the river banks, while others threw refuse indiscriminately in the town.

Nene Anonger asked the youth of Kofigya to endeavor to seek explanations on projects from him or the assembly member for redress and appealed to the municipal assembly to assist them in their quest for more development projects.
