Wed, 16 Jul 1997 Source: --

Koforidua (E/R), July 15, A day's seminar on adolescent fertility and reproductive health in the Eastern region was held at Koforidua today. The seminar, on the theme: "adolescent fertility and reproductive health", was organized by the Population Impact Project (PIP) of the University of Ghana, Legon, in collaboration with the Eastern regional Coordinating Council. It was attended by about 100 participants including parliamentarians, regional heads of department, district coordinating directors, the media and health personnel. The Eastern regional Minister, Miss Patience Adow, said the seminar, coming three days after hosting the national launching of World Population Day, should provide the region with more opportunities to reflect on population issues. She gave the region's adolescent population figures based on the 1984 census as 24 per cent and said efforts should be made to deal with fertility and reproductive health problems. Miss Adow further referred to lowering figures in pregnancies in the region from 17.9 per cent in 1991 to 16 per cent in 1996 and said "for fear of the social sanctions and shame associated with pre-marital sex and pregnancy, some girls seek abortions and more often go in for unsafe abortions". The regional minister said to save adolescents from such dangers, they should be provided with reliable information about their sexuality and other services such as counselling and contraceptives for the sexually active.
