A Tamale high court presided over by Justice Noble Nkrumah, has sentenced Awudu Badjai, 33 – a farmer who was said to be an ally of notorious armed robber, Johnson Kombian – to death by hanging for murdering Tanko Gingon Kombian, a musician in Nakpanduri in July 2013.

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the convict killed his victim on the grounds that the deceased use the lyrics of a particular song which he composed to disgrace him (convict), linking him to a number of criminal activities in the community.

According to ASP Tetteh, his outfit had information from the Nakpanduri Health Centre that the deceased was brought in with a gunshot wound but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead a few minutes after arrival at the health facility. Awudu Badjai shot the deceased on the chest at close range with a foreign pistol, killing him instantly; and was reported by the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu to have died of profuse bleeding because of the gunshot wounds he sustained in the chest.

He admitted the offence in his caution statement, stating that he found a pistol on the ground in the township and picked it. According to the police, Badjai said he met some friends of his at a popular drinking spot and decided to show the pistol to them and that when he was removing the weapon it fell off his hand and accidentally killed the musician but for fear of his life, fled the scene.

He was given a hot chase, captured and was almost lynched by members of the community, but for the timely intervention of the police.

Awudu Badjai is said to be on police wanted list for his alleged involvement in several criminal activities.
