Kumasi, Nov.29, GNA - The Konongo police on Monday shot and killed two suspected armed robbers in a shoot out, and arrested two others at Ohene Nkwanta in the Asante-Akim North District of Ashanti. The dead were identified as Musah Bello and Kwaku Musah while those arrested were; Musah Inusah, 21, a Malian and Usman Sulei, 27 from Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

Police Inspector Yussif Mohammed Tanko of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Unit who briefed the Press on the incident in Kumasi on Monday said, two of the armed robbers managed to escape. He said at about 2.30am on Monday, the robbers blocked a section of the Kumasi-Accra highway at Bomfa Junction in a bid to force drivers to stop so that they could rob passengers.

Police Inspector Tanko said, a big truck that came along first saw the blockade and suspected that it was the work of armed robbers and therefore, drove over the logs.

This he said; paved the way for other vehicles to pass and the passengers quickly phoned the police information room in Kumasi and reported the road blockade. Police Inspector Tanko said the Kumasi police information room also quickly relayed the message to the Konongo police who were nearer to the scene.

He said, however, that the Buffalo Police Unit in Kumasi quickly mobilized and joined their Konongo colleagues but when they got to the scene, the robbers had escaped into the bush. Police Inspector Tanko said the police then combed the area for about six hours but did not find the robbers and so they gave up but told the people in the area to still be on the lookout for any suspicious character they would see. He said at about 1300hours on Monday, the people spotted two suspicious looking characters at Ohene Nkwanta, near Bomfa and quickly relayed a message to the Konongo Police who responded and pursued the robbers to their hideouts.

Police Inspector Tanko said immediately the two robbers spotted the police, they opened fire and the police returned the fire killing them and succeeded in arresting two others, whilst the remaining two managed to escape.
