Officials of the Maternity Ward of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital say the workload there is very high because most of the labour cases in the polyclinics in Accra are transferred to Korle Bu. The hospital handles between 60 and 70 delivery cases a day. Originally the hospital was registering a delivery rate of about a thousand a month but this has increased to 150 and 1600, making an average of 18, thousand babies a year. This situation has put considerable stress on facilities and equipment at the maternity block. It is a common sight to see pregnant women, nursing mothers and new-born babies lying on the floor at the Korle Bu maternity block.
