The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) has welcomed class one and kindergarten one pupils in the 36 public basic schools in the Municipality to the 2018/2019 academic year.
Officials of the Assembly visited the various schools and interacted with the pupils, teachers and parents seeking admission for their children as part of the 2018 “My First Day at School” celebration.
My First Day at School was initiated by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to provide an opportunity to public officials especially Ministers, Chief Executive Officers of District Assemblies and other dignitaries to visit schools and interact with pupils to make their first school experience memorable and encouraging.
Each of the pupils received a pair of shoes, biscuits, books, pencils, sharpeners, erasers and noodles.
Mr Mike Owusu Amoako, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Coordinating Director, accompanied by Mrs Rosina Adobor, Municipal Education Director and Mr Roger Debrah, Public Relations Officer for the Municipal Education Directorate visited the Nganoman Community KKMA Basic School, Kpone-Bawaleshie Presbyterian School, Desuase KKMA Basic School and Gonteng KKMA Primary School.
Mr Amoako explained that the Assembly decided to give the children shoes instead of the usual confectionaries because such items could be used for several terms and even kept as a souvenir when they outgrow them to always remind them of their first day at school.
He added that since most of the parents in the communities in the Municipality were peasant farmers and had financial challenges, most of the children either go to school barefooted or wore torn shoes.
He pleaded with parents to do their best to provide basic needs for their children while government also did its part to provide free education and feeding.
The Coordinating Director commended teachers especially those at Gonteng for sacrificing to teach in the deprived area and urged them to continue the good work while promising to reward their efforts during the Municipality’s teachers’ awards ceremony.
At Nganoman, he promised to furnish a newly completed GETFund six-classroom block for pupils who were studying under trees or learning in the three over crowded old and dilapidated classrooms.
Mrs Adobor also commended the teachers and urged head teachers not to deny any child of admission as he reminded them of the option of using the shift school system if the children outnumbered the available places.
She explained that the day was to receive new entrants into the school system to encourage the children to attend school regularly.
