Kufuor Cannot Annoint His Successor -CPP

On Sunday, July 13th, the NPP held a big meeting at Kasoa in the Central Region to stage the “anointing of the successor” to President Kufuor. Every political party has the right to adopt what they think will convince the people of Ghana to vote for them. The NPP as a political organization has already agreed that Nana Akuffo-Addo should be their Flag bearer. That fact we know already. We can understand an outdooring of their Flag bearer. We can understand the introduction of their Flag bearer to the Ghanaian public. In fact, this has already been done at different events. We can also understand it if this big meeting at Kasoa was to launch their national campaign for the December 7, 2008 elections.

We can see why parliamentary candidates were introduced though it is interesting the attempt to gloss over difficulties at their primaries which have left some constituencies without candidates and the little matter of remaining disputes over acclaimed candidates.

We cannot quarrel with the NPP about the choice of Presidential or Parliamentary candidates. But recent political history teaches us that a sitting President CANNOT just “anoint” another person to succeed him as President. J. J. Rawlings failed with his “Swedru Declaration” done in favour of Professor Atta Mills. In the same way, the “Kasoa Annointing” of Nana Akuffo-Addo will also fail. Ghanaians are wary of continuity apostles when the reality on the ground shows that something DIFFERENT from what has been tried so far is needed to sweep the majority of Ghanaians into prosperity away from poverty.

There is also the ‘small’ matter of “massive crowds” at rallies. Ghanaians will remember too well K. A. Gbedemah’s National Alliance of Liberals (NAL) and the crowds they pulled in Kumasi. Not too long ago the NDC pulled huge crowds to their rallies and staged defections. That was in the year 2000. And they lost the elections.

While the “declared” Prof. Mills and the “anointed” Nana Akuffo-Addo are assuming that singing continuity songs has already put them in the new Flagstaff House, the hard working CPP Flag bearer is going from community to community to spread the message of “change you can feel in your pocket”. Job creation is what “Edwumawura” is using to win over voters to the CPP one person at a time and one community at a time.

The CPP is getting its legendary organization magic firmly in place by the middle of September in preparation for a national campaign launch to be held on Sunday, September 21st which is the Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birth date. The CPP will launch its Manifesto on July 22nd in preparation for the launching of the campaign so that the party’s foot soldiers will be well armed in time to spread the message to the electorate prior to September 21st.
