to help stop falling moral standards
Somanya(ER), Nov. 18, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufour has appealed to traditional rulers to endeavour to arrest the decline in morality and decency among the Ghanaian youth.
He said government and chiefs had an obligation to ensure that the youth were trained to become good citizens rather than liabilities to the state.
President Kufuor made the appeal in an address read for him at a grand durbar of the chiefs and people Yilo Krobo Traditional Area to climax activities marking this year's celebration of Kloyosikplemi festival at Somanya on Saturday.
He said chiefs had the responsibility to translate the values and customs that defined the Ghanaian identity among the youth to make them productive citizens.
"We have a duty to inculcate in them values that can make them good citizens rather than liabilities to the country when they succumb to foreign cultures that are alien to our society," he added. President Kufour urged chiefs to be more involved in development at the grassroots to reduce illiteracy, squalor and morbidity among the people.
"The role of chiefs in national development is indispensable, so we entreat you to collaborate with the assemblies to eliminate indiscipline, illiteracy, diseases and poverty among the people." Kpetekple Narh Dawutey Ologo, Konor of Yilo Krobo, commended government for the numerous policy initiatives that had improved the living standards of the people.
However, he appealed to Government to upgrade the Somanya Health Centre to a District Hospital and provide a bus for Yilo Krobo Secondary Commercial School.
Kpetekple Ologo who is also President of Eastern Region House of Chiefs said introduction of the Capitation Grant had led to dramatic increase in school enrolment in basic schools in the district.
