Kufuor calls for fair treatment within Police Service

Accra, March, 10 GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Friday inaugurated the Police Council and charged it to see to it that there was fair treatment within the Service.

He said they should make sure that all Police Officers were treated fairly to infuse confidence in the Service. This way, Ghanaians could go to bed assured that they could sleep well.


The 10-member Council is under the Chairmanship of Mr Justice Samuel Glenn Baddoo, a retired Supreme Court Judge.


The other members include Papa Owusu Ankomah, the Interior Minister; Mr E.A. Owusu-Ansah, Deputy Attorney-General and Deputy Minister of Justice, Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, a Law Lecturer, Nana Awulae Annor Adjaye II, a traditional ruler and Mr Patrick Acheampong, Inspector General of Police (IGP).


The rest are Mr C.K. Kuadey, a retired Commissioner of Police; Mr J. Ebow Quashie, a Legal Practitioner, Mrs Gifty Annin-Botwe, Commissioner of Police in charge of Welfare and Chief Inspector Ernestina Asare.

President Kufuor noted that law and order underpinned the peace, security and progress of any society and it was for this reason that the Police who were responsible for the maintenance of internal security must be well looked after.


The Service should be well-equipped, he said, adding that, the Government expected that the Police was brought up to date. President Kufuor said in the present age of Information Communication Technology (ICT) it was important that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Forensic Department of the Service were sufficiently supported to perform. He pointed out that the rich background of the members showed how important the Council was.


Mr Justice Baddoo said they were conscious of the enormous responsibility they had been entrusted with and gave the assurance that they would discharge their duties with diligence. He said the Council would work to maintain and improve the professional standards of the Service.


President Kufuor earlier administered to the members the Oath of Office and the Oath of Secrecy.
