Twifo-Praso (C/R), May 13, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday inaugurated the Twifo Praso Model Senior High School (SHS) built at a cost of 2.2 million Ghana cedis.

Situated on a sprawling 101 hectares, the structures provided include an administration block; assembly hall; science and computer laboratories; home economic department; dinning hall and dormitories. The old site, situated in the heart of the town, has now been turned into a Health Assistants Training School.

The idea of upgrading at least one SHS into a model school is meant to give equal opportunity to the youth throughout the country to access high quality education in their respective districts.

President Kufuor said the Government has shown commitment to human resource development, one of the key priorities, which was driving the national agenda towards the achievement of a middle-income status. He said this was evident from the provision of school infrastructure; supply of adequate teaching and learning materials, the institution of the capitation grant and the school-feeding programme. He counselled the students to endeavour to build a high reputation based on an all round outstanding performance in academic and extra curricula activities.

"Students of this model school should stand out for their good conduct and discipline," he said.

President Kufuor also asked the school authorities and the District Assembly to ensure routine maintenance of the projects, to enable many generations of the youth to enjoy the benefit of quality education.

Professor Dominic Fobih, Education Minister, said improvement of educational infrastructure in public SHS had resulted in corresponding increase in enrolment of students.

In the 2005-2006 academic year there were 314,310 students in public SHS and this went up to 376,049 in 2006-7. The Headmaster, Mr Mike Afadzi Hayford appealed for additional bungalows for teachers.
