... Screams of ‘cocaine’ ‘cocaine’ ‘cocaine’ when the President’s motorcade was driving by
President John Agyekum Kufuor’s recent comment that former President JJ Rawlings is soliciting support from without to destabilise his government, has elicited some damning responses from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), this time from its General Secretary, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
In a rather dismissive tone, vociferous Asiedu-Nketiah, affectionately called General Mosquito, told The Independent yesterday that, the President is making those baseless allegations because he is a desperate man, who is panicky about the dwindling fortunes of his ruling party.
President Kufuor is said to have made the remarks on Sunday at two separate rallies in the Offinso-South Constituency, where a bye-election is taking place today.
The President is reported to have alleged that former President’ Rawlings’ visit to Cuba and Venezuela were aimed at soliciting financial support to overthrow (Kufuor’s) government.
According to Gen. Mosquito, President John Agyekum Kufuor has not come to terms with the fact that, the NPP is no more a force to reckon with in his territory, the Ashanti Region, and as a result wants to find comfort in venting his spleen on the former President.
According to NDC Gen. Secretary, the tremendous support that the NPP enjoyed in recent years in the Ashanti Region, has taken a nose dive, and that is giving the President sleepless nights.
He added that, a typical example of the President’s depreciating popularity in the Region came to light when some constituents kept screaming ‘cocaine’ ‘cocaine’ ‘cocaine’ when the President’s motorcade was driving by.
The NDC Gen. Secretary pointed out that, President Kufour’s comments were intended to intimidate the constituents of Offinso South. He noted that, the assertion in the past that, even a dog that contests on the ticket of the NPP will win an election in Offinso, is no more applicable since the people have realized that, the NPP, over the years, has failed them.
“The people would want to send a strong signal to the NPP that, they have indeed failed them and so they will not vote for them in this bye-election,” he claimed. Taking few jabs at the NPP’s candidate in the Offinso South bye-election,
Gen. Mosquito claimed that the NPP candidate, Dr Owusu Achaw Duah, is an incoherent person, who will find it very difficult to articulate the views of his people in Parliament.
He based his claim on the fact that, the NPP candidate, who is an Accra-based medical practitioner, throughout his campaigns has always spoken through a spokesperson, which is an indication that, he cannot think and talk on his own when he gets to Parliament.
