President Kufuor's weekend meeting with other African leaders in Senegal has been hailed as a success. Foreign Minister, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, says decisions taken at the meeting will help in the implementation of the initiative known as the New Economic Partnership for African Development (NEPAD).

Speaking at the Kotoka International Airport on the President's arrival from Senegal, Mr Owusu-Agyeman said the meeting agreed that such consultations should continue to ensure that programmes and projects under NEPAD are implemented.

President Kufuor is reported to have made a strong case for the establishment of a second monetary zone for the Anglophone countries in West Africa. He also asked the other leaders to speed up the process towards the use of a single West African currency. The meeting proposed that the governors of the various central banks within the sub-region should meet to work out the modalities for a single currency.

A special representative of French President, Jacque Chirac, Michel Camdessus also briefed the meeting on issues raised during a recent discussion between President Chirac and 12 African leaders held in Paris a few days ago.

The meeting was attended by Heads of State of Algeria, Benin, Senegal, Niger, La Cote d'Ivoire, Gabon and Ghana with observers from the Secretariat of the Economic Community of West African States, West African Monetary Union and the African Development Bank.
