There were several untruths peddled about then President John Agyekum Kufuor and one of them which hurt him most was the constant cocaine accusation started by the National Democratic Congress, Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani, Chief of Staff in the erstwhile regime has revealed.
According to him, the then opposition NDC made Kufuor appear as a drug kingpin.
Today, the table has somewhat turned with the NDC at the receiving end and perhaps for equalization purposes, members of the New Patriotic Party are also claiming that the brother of President Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama and head of COCOBOD, Dr. Opuni are well connected to the infamous lady, Nayele Ametefeh; whose attempt to smuggle over 12 kilograms of cocaine to the United Kingdom, has brought shame upon Ghana.
But the former Chief of Staff, Mr. Kwadwo Mpiani believes that inasmuch as the NPP reserves every right to link the current government to the recent cocaine bust, they should bear in mind that doing so would always make the real drug dealers have the last laugh behind the scenes.
His reason for saying this on Peace FM’s midday news was that trivializing such a serious issue and politicizing it would rather make it difficult for the real drug lords to be smoked out and arrested.
Mr. Mpiani further cautioned his party members not to pay the NDC back in their own coin but rather address the issue in a civilized manner.
“If we don’t approach the matter well, we would end up damaging the reputation of Ghana. People would start developing a discriminatory approach to citizens from Ghana if we address the issue like a football match. When you get to the UK, they have no idea about the NPP, CPP or NDC, all they know is Ghana and if this is the way we would approach cocaine issues, they would always keep tabs on us”, he warned.
