Kufuor wins majority votes in 6 out of 10 regions

Accra, Dec. 10, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor won the majority of votes in six out of 10 regions while his closest rival Prof. John Evans Atta Mills won the majority in four regions in the just ended presidential election, according to preliminary results released by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday.

Ashanti Region gave President Kufuor the highest number of votes of 1,235,395 (74.61 per cent) according to the figures based on results from 225 constituencies.


The president was declared winner on Thursday night with 52.75 per cent of the votes giving him an unassailable lead.


President Kufuor won 910,159 votes (51.99 per cent) in the Greater Accra Region, 554,933 votes (60.27 per cent) in the Eastern Region, 447,351 votes (58.45 per cent) in the Western Region and 414,339 votes (58.57 per cent) in the Central Region and 386,821 votes (52.58 per cent) in the Brong Ahafo Region.


Northern Region gave President Kufuor 239,833 votes (35.54 per cent), Upper East gave him 106,003 votes (31.66 pr cent), Volta had 100,659 votes (14.26 per cent) and Upper West 68,238 votes (32.23 per cent).

Professor Mills, who won 44.32 per cent of the popular votes, had 811,883 votes (46.37 per cent) in the Greater Accra Region, 591,696 votes (83.83 per cent) in the Volta Region, 398,362 votes (24.06 per cent), in Ashanti, 384,363 votes (56.96 per cent), in the Northern Region, 353,356 votes (38.38 per cent) in the Eastern Region, 334,334 votes (45.45 per cent) in the Brong Ahafo Region 298,959 votes (39.06 per cent) in Western, 180,462 votes (53.90 per cent) in Upper East and 119,982 votes (56.67 per cent) in Upper West.


Dr Edward Mahama who had 1.93 per cent of total votes, obtained his highest number of votes from the Upper East Region where he won 42,460 votes (12.68 per cent). He won 37,761 votes (5.60 per cent) in the Northern Region, 20,306 votes (9.59 per cent) in the Upper West Region, 16,065 votes (0.92 per cent) in the Greater Accra Region, 14,082 votes (0.85 per cent) in the Ashanti Region, 8,866 votes (1.21 per cent) in Brong Ahafo Region, 6,451 votes (0.91) in the Volta Region), 6,407 votes (0.84) per cent) in the Western Region and 5,532 votes (0.60 per cent) in the Eastern Region.


Mr George Aggudey who had one per cent of the total votes, had 12,780 votes (1.89 per cent) in the Northern Region, 12,677 votes (1.66 per cent) in the Western Region, 12,600 votes (0.72) per cent) in the Greater Accra Region, 9,981 votes (1.41 per cent) in the Central Region. 7,921 votes (0.48 per cent) in Ashanti, 7,021 votes (0.99 per cent) in the Volta Region, 6,851 votes (0.74 per cent) in Eastern Region, 5,860 votes (1.75 per cent) in the Upper East Region, 5,601 votes (0.76 per cent) in Brong Ahafo and 3,209 votes (1.52 per cent) in Upper West Region.


Turn out was highest in the Ashanti Region where 88 per cent of voters cast their ballots followed by Greater Accra and Central regions which each had 84.4 per cent, Volta region (83.8), Eastern Region 82.2 per cent), Upper East (81.6 per cent), Upper East (81.2 per cent), Brong Ahafo (80.1 per cent), Upper East (78.7 per cent) and Western (78.0 per cent).
