Kukurantumi leaders sign undertaking to protect teachers

The six leaders of Agona Kukurantumi on Friday signed an undertaking to protect lives and property of all the 14 teachers at the Kukurantumi ADA Primary/Junior High School (JHS).

The decision was taken after the Aspiring Assemblyman for the area, Mr Maxwell Mensah, allegedly attacked a teacher of the school.

The leaders are Mr Joseph Buabeng, Vice Chairman, School Management Committee (SMC), Mr Yaw Donkoh, Mr Kwesi Botchwey, Mr F.B. Arthur, PTA Chairman, Opanyin Kweku Arhin and Mr William Mensah.

Mr Robert Mensah, the Agona West Municipal Director of Education made this known to the Press at Agona Swedru.

The Municipal Director said on February 25, 2015, Maxwell Mensah, an aspiring Assemblyman for Kukurantumi went to the school and threatened to cause the transfer of the teachers if he is voted into office for poor performance of the students.

According to the Director of Education, the threat did not go down well with the teachers and they dared him, adding that, one Mohammed Gari, a teacher at the school, told the Aspiring Assemblyman that he cannot cause the transfer of any teacher of the school.

The Director said degenerated into an argument and in the process the Aspiring Assemblyman slapped Mr Gari resulting in a scuffle between the two.

According to him Mr Buabeng, the Vice Chairman of the SMC, who stays near the school saw the incident and came in to separate the two.

He said the Aspiring Assemblyman fell unconscious after the fight and was rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Government Hospital where he was admitted for two days.

The Director stated that Mr Bright Ametekpeh , Head teacher of the school was not at the school during the incident.

According to the Director, investigation had revealed that the head teacher had absented himself from school for one week without permission and would be sanctioned according to GES rules and regulations.

The Director condemned the behaviour of some parents and leaders who take the law into their hands and attack teachers when their children report their teachers to them with the least provocation.

Mr Buabeng, on behalf of the Chiefs and the people of Kukurantumi assured the Education Directors that they would not violate the undertaking to safeguard the interest of teachers.
