The city of Kumasi lies in the hilly, forested heart of Ghana’s Ashanti region. Now a sprawling city home to hundreds of thousands, Kumasi was the capital of the Ashanti Kingdom in the 18th and 19th centuries. The city was razed by British forces in 1874.
