Kumasi Kidnap: Canadian officials in touch with victims families

Canadian officials say they are in touch with families of the two young women kidnapped in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The Canadian news cable Global Affairs confirmed the kidnapping reports.

Though it will not confirm specifics citing security concerns, it noted that Canadian officials are collaborating with the police in the Ashanti Region over the incident.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is adamant saying his government will not facilitate payment to such groups while his predecessor Stephen Harper publicly denied paying ransoms.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command confirmed the abduction of two Canadians, aged, 19 and 20 in Ahodwo in Kumasi, who were volunteers with the NGO Youth Challenge International.

The assailants are said to have stopped and pushed the two into a car at gunpoint at about 8:30 P.M. at Silver Spring avenue, around Vienna City, a popular pub in Kumasi.

One of the victims named Lauren and is in the country with her compatriot on an exchange programme with the Entrepreneurship Department of the Kumasi Technical University (KsTU).

An Uber driver is in the grips of the police assisting in investigations into the matter.
