The Kumasi Police have arrested a 60 year-old herbalist at Moshie Zongo for illegal possession of firearms and ammunitions.

The suspect, Baba Yuroba was arrested on Sunday during a joint Police/Military exercise. The Police found on him three locally manufactured double barrelled pistols and 28 cartridges.

Mr George Asaimah, Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said Baba was arrested during a special exercise to combat crime in the area and he would soon be put before court. He said the exercise was not intended to prevent a political party from carrying out its planned demonstration.

"The exercise is a pure security operation without any political undertones. The police are firmly in control so the public should not panic." He appealed to the public to volunteer information on the activities of criminals.

Speaking to the press later Baba Yuroba said he bought the guns about three months ago from the open market in Kumasi to protect his life that had been under constant threat from his brothers and other criminals in the area.

He said, even though, he had no licence he was not using the guns to commit any crime and he could identify the boys from whom he bought the guns.
