Kumasi pray for Akufo-Addo

Thousands of people in Kumasi, mostly New Patriotic Party (NPP) members on Wednesday morning, marched through the principal streets of the city with candles and Holy Bibles, as they prayed fervently to God to protect Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the NPP flagbearer.

Mostly clad in the paraphernalia of the largest opposition political party in the country, the enthusiastic people also prayed to God to protect the nine Supreme Court judges hearing the petition filed by three prominent members of the NPP.

They prayed against attempts by the NDC to prolong the matter in court. They also asked God to intervene in the matter so that the case would be adjudicated within two months.

Dubbed ‘Street Candle Walk,’ the programme was massively patronized by people from all walks of life. It was organized by the Free Education Now Prayer Group (FENPG,) a pressure group in Kumasi with branches across the country.

About 500 students, who have failed to attend various Senior High Schools in the country due to financial difficulties, took part in the spiritual affair which lasted for about seven hours.

The event, which began at the Adum Post Office, could be likened to the recent demonstration, which saw people march through the principal streets at Kejetia, Asafo, Aboabo, Asawase, Roman Hill.

In his succinct address, Andy Owusu, National Coordinator, FENPG, insisted that Nana Akufo Addo won the 2012 polls, stressing that the free education message was largely accepted by many Ghanaians.

He alleged that President Mahama and the Electoral Commission (EC), particularly Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan teamed up to rig the elections to deny the NPP an overwhelming victory.

He claimed the NDC had resorted to Voodoo practices to cast spell on the Supreme Court judges so that they would eventually deliver a wrong verdict.

Owusu said the heinous plans of the NDC could only be defeated through fervent prayers, urging all NPP members and people who have the interest of the country at heart to remember the judges in prayers.

He stated that there can never be peace in the country without justice, tasking the Supreme Court judges to adjudicate the matter objectively in the interest of mother Ghana.

President Mahama inwardly is aware that the seat doesn’t belong to him and God would cause a miracle for the truth to prevail soon, Owusu said.

After each speech, the crowd selected a topic and prayed incessantly to shake the foundation of the Kumasi Central Market. Traders were seen leaving their wares to join the prayer session.

Monica Afriyie aka Mama China, a leading member of FENPG, sternly cautioned President Mahama not to use his position as the first gentleman of the land to interfere in the matter. She said though they love peace, they would strongly resist any attempt by the NDC government to interfere in the court case.
