Kwabena Adjei?s future on the line

The political ambitions of one-time majority leader in parliament and a former Member of Parliament for Biakoye constituency in the Volta Region, Kwabena Adjei, in targeting the national chairmanship position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), may be in serious jeopardy.

This is because his own constituents, who voted him into Parliament for three consecutive times (1992/1996/2000), seem to have outrightly rejected him.

The constituency executives say the National Executive Committee of the largest opposition party must act swiftly by dropping him "in the interest of justice and fair play before the party's teeming supporters and well-wishers got demoralized".

This and other claims were contained in a two-page petition filed recently against his candidature in the national race.

The petition, dated 24th November 2005 and signed by all eleven executive members in his constituency, accused him of neglect, disloyalty to the party in general, and dragging the party to court just before the general elections.

The petitioners are also accusing the former MP of neglecting the constituency soon after the NDC's defeat in the 2000 elections and also taking away all party logistics, such as vehicles and outboard motors.

"Because of his neglect of the constituency, he was not adequately informed about the constituency conference of 2004. He consequently filed a suit at a Ho High Court, placing an injunction on the conference without recourse to the party's disciplinary procedures," it said.

Other serious accusations leveled against him in the petition were that he teamed up with an independent candidate in the constituency and openly campaigned against the NDC candidate.
