Do you know that it was the wish of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, that a Northerner would succeed him?

According to a historian, Yaw Anokye Frimpong, Kwame Nkrumah made a great prophecy about the people who should lead Ghana while in exile in Guinea after the military junta ousted him.

He, after examining the circumstances surrounding his removal, Ghana’s first president, realised that it was the people he trusted who betrayed him.

“Nkrumah made a great prophecy about the North… I have never mentioned this anywhere, but the fact is that my grandfather was very close to Nkrumah. He was the one who told me of this prophecy.

“When Nkrumah got to Guinea, and he studied all the circumstances of the coup, he realised that all the people he placed his hope on, including his personal bodyguard Michelle, his IGP Halie, and CID commander Doku. He trusted them very well, but they all betrayed him,” the historian narrated.

He also said that even Nkrumah’s own people betrayed him, but the Northerners, who were among the leadership of the police and military as well as his government, refused to take part in the plan to remove him.

He added that because of the loyalty of the Northerners to him, Nkrumah vowed that if he returned to power, he was only going to work with them (the Northerners).

He also stated that a Northerner was going to take over from him as the President of Ghana.

“His own tribesmen, including Dr Alex Quaison Sackey, whose mother was from Nkrumah village, all went to take bribes from the white to betray him. It was the Northerner who stood by him. So, he made the prophecy that if he returned to Ghana, he was going to work with them and that after him, a Northerner should become the President of Ghana,” he said.
