Kwesi Nduom's Supporters Go Wild

The candidature of Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom as the parliamentary candidate of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) for the Komenda-Edina-Equafo-Abirem (KEEA) Constituency continues to disturb the nerve centre of that party.

Members and supporters of the CPP and Dr Ndoum in KEEA last Saturday demonstrated at the main commercial centre of Elmina to register their protest against the decision by some CPP chiefs to revoke the candidature of Dr Nduom. That decision though, newsmen gathered, is yet to be considered by the party?s executive. What triggered off the demonstration, our forays into KEEA CPP have unearthed, was a publication in the Daily Graphic last Saturday that the central committee of the party was to meet to revoke the election of the Energy Minister as the CPP presidential nominee of the KEEA constituency.

The said publication which was attributed to an anonymous source, our investigation has found out, was masterminded by some face-less elements within the CPP hierarchy who are unhappy with Dr Nduom who has declared supports for President Kufour for the forthcoming presidential election. According to the CPP top men his support could easily be misconstrued as coming from the party.

However, the party?s General Secretary, Dr Nii Noi Dowuona, in a statement over the weekend, which invariably was a reaction to the said publication, denied that the central committee was considering the possibility of revoking the nomination of Dr Nduom. ?In the case of Dr Nduom, the KEEA Constituency has written to the National Chairman informing him of his election,? said the party?s General Secretary, who added that this new ?material is yet to come before the central committee for approval as in this connection, the national leadership has not acted on the matter as reported by the anonymous source?.

Interestingly, the demonstrators included supporters of other political parties who have since the launching of Dr Nduom?s campaign, been part of the Energy Minister?s all-inclusive agenda. The marchers who are outside of the CPP party, but identify themselves with the candidature of Dr Nduom, could not hide their identity. These supporters, from especially the NPP and NDC, openly displayed their party paraphernalia. The singular most poignant placard of the demonstrators read ?No Nduom, No CPP in KEEA.
