The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) has made some serious allegations against the New Patriotic Party (NPP), claiming they’re intentionally trying to tarnish the legacy of Ghana’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

This comes amidst the NPP’s own efforts to highlight their achievements under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which they believe can be compared to Nkrumah’s accomplishments.

According to the Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG), the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) actions aim to rewrite history to favor one of its founders, Dr. J.B. Danquah, who played a “modest” role in Ghana’s struggle for independence. However, this attempt has failed due to the vigilance of Ghanaians.

SMG claims the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has spread falsehoods to magnify Dr. J.B. Danquah’s role, falsely naming him the founder of Ghana, contrary to historical facts. This accusation was made by SMG General Secretary, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, in a statement ahead of September 21’s Founder’s Day celebration, citing several NPP government activities as evidence.

“The attack on Ghana’s history has taken various forms, including speeches, changes to school textbooks, alterations to guidebooks at museums and historical sites, and the redevelopment of the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum from a reflective space to an entertainment center. The amendment of the Public Holidays Act 2019 is particularly notable, a subtle but dangerous institutional attack on Ghana’s national identity”.

The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) accused the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) vice presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, of making disrespect for Kwame Nkrumah a core aspect of his campaign. SMG praised Ghanaians for thwarting this agenda but cautioned that the NPP may escalate its efforts to achieve this goal.
