LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES INTRODUCED TO SOUND METRES

The Environmental Protection Agency is introducing the law enforcement agencies to the use of sound metres and smoke detectors in controlling noise levels and vehicular emissions into the environment. This came out at a meeting of the Compliance Enforcement Network Committee of the EPA held in Accra yesterday. According to Dr. George Manful of the EPA, currently, the Agency was running a seminar for 25 participants drawn from the five sub metropolitan in the Greater Accra Region on the use of the sound metres to monitor noise levels.

That, he said, was to ensure that individuals and organizations complied with the regulations on the noise. Dr. Manful said the EPA would work in concert with various recognized bodies to ensure that the environment was protected . He said the agency had had sessions with various religious groups on the issue of noise. On the smoke detectors to be procured soon, he explained that the specification was provided by the police and they would eventually use them for prosecuting offenders. The police , Dr. Manful said , would also be offered some training by the EPA in the use of the smoke detectors. Dr. Peter Acquah, Executive Secretary of the EPA, said the Agency had drawn a programme to interact with all stake - holders in environmental protection on a sustained basis.
