John Dramani Mahama is Ghana's President
President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan facility at the Sweden Ghana Medical Centre (SGMC), marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s efforts to expand access to advanced medical diagnostics.
The facility is expected to strengthen early detection, diagnosis, and monitoring of complex diseases such as cancer and neurological conditions by providing high-precision imaging services locally.
The development will also reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialised scans, easing both financial and logistical burdens on families seeking advanced medical care.
Health officials say the introduction of PET scan technology is a major boost to Ghana’s diagnostic capacity and forms part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s healthcare system and improve treatment outcomes.
The facility is also expected to support medical professionals with more accurate data for treatment planning, particularly in oncology, where early and precise detection is critical.
At the commissioning ceremony, President Mahama underscored government’s commitment to investing in modern health infrastructure to ensure equitable access to quality healthcare services across the country.
The PET scan centre adds to ongoing efforts to position Ghana as a regional hub for advanced medical services, while improving survival rates through early diagnosis and timely intervention.
