The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD Ghana) in collaboration wit UNICEF and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has released 2016 District League Table with La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal emerging as the best performing Assembly with 77.8% score.

It placed second in last year’s ranking with Tema Metropolitan Assembly falling from it’s first position last year to second in 2016.

Awutu Senya East secured the third position with a score of 74.4 percent.

The Deputy Director and Head of Research and Programs, Dr. Franklin Oduro announcing the results said 164 Districts have relatively improved in their score over last year’s.

“We’re optimistic that the District League Table will impact positively on the frontline staff, especially the MDA’s as it will stimulate them to ask questions and make comparisons from other districts in terms of certain delivery. Similarly the League Table will provide platform for Assembly members, Opinion Leaders, Chiefs and Civil Societies, to ask questions on how their districts are faring. The resulting awareness will generate further healthy competition and improved service delivery,” he said.

He urged struggling and poor performing districts to learn from the success story of the high achieving districts and leading ones while striving to improve their districts and the lives of residents.

North Tongu District was ranked last as the least improved district and occupied 216th position.

Indicators

Indicators used in ranking the 216 districts included the quality of education, sanitation, rural water supply, health, security and governance.

The project, conceived and developed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Centre for Democratic Development, Ghana (CDD), is run in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and based on the global practice of developing indices for measuring and monitoring progress.

It seeks to support central and local governments to better understand progress in development across the country, as well as strengthen social transparency and accountability in national development.
