The Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) Team of the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA), in conjunction with the School Health Education Programme (SHEP) headed by Madam Comfort Donkor, the Municipal SHEP Co-Ordinator, on Thursday launched Sanitation Clubs for 60 schools drawn from the Municipality.

Welcoming the gathering at the Elder Lucas Mallet Assembly Hall of the Madina Faith Community Baptist School Complex, Madam Donkor said cholera killed a number of children every year, hence the formation of the sanitation clubs to help promote the good health and development of the children.

Mr.Lambert Kwara, the LaNMMA Sanitation Prosecutor, said sanitation was a shared responsibility, and should therefore be part of our lives.

He stressed the need to practise sanitation both at home and on the farm, explaining that food prepared on the farm must be hygienic for consumption.

He deplored indiscriminate defecation and the throwing of rubbish in communities, and advised pupils to wash their hands under running water with soap to avoid the microbial contamination after attending to nature's call.

Mr.Kwara further advised school pupils to brush their teeth in the mornings and evenings, and take their bath regularly.

He told the pupils that they would fall sick if they failed to adhere to sanitation rules.

Mr.Kwara appealed to landlords to construct toilet facilities within their premises to avoid indiscriminate defecation in the communities.

Members of the Queen of Peace School Sanitation Club gave poetry recitals on Mother Earth and Sanitation, depicting that insanitary conditions were destroying the environment.

Madam Gifty Boateng, the LaNMMA Deputy Director of Education in charge of Monitoring and Supervision, urged teachers to make the Sanitation Clubs vibrant.

Mrs. Elizabeth Oduro-Mensah, Municipal Director of Education who launched the Schools' Sanitation Clubs, urged the schools pupils to act as agents of change.

In attendance at the launch were Schools SHEP Co-ordinators, including RRI Team members.
