Labourer arraigned for escaping from lawful custody

Dennis Adjei Adjeikwei, Labourer has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for escaping from lawful custody on April 1, at Teshie-Kpeshie Bridge.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the offence but after further probing and explanations, Dennis admitted escaping from custody.

Dennis has, been remanded into custody to reappear before the court presided over by Madam Ellen Amoah, on April 23.

Prosecuting Police Chief Inspector Charles Chester told the court that the witness in the case is a Police Detective stationed at Teshie police station and lives in Accra, while the accused person is a labourer and lives at Teshie.

He said on April 1, the accused person was arraigned on a robbery charge and was sentenced to 10 years in hard labour on his own plea.

The prosecution said after the court proceedings the witness together with other witnesses in the case were escorting the accused person to the Teshie police station, in a taxi, when upon reaching a section of the road just after Kpeshie bridge, the car slowed down and the accused managed to escape.

Police Chief Inspector Chester told the court that Dennis was at the back seat with the witness and took advantage of the slow movement of the taxi and used his legs to forcibly open the back door since he was handcuff behind and jumped into the lagoon.

According to the prosecution he swam through the muddy water and escaped although he was given a hot chase by the witness and other witnesses in the case, including some military men who happened to be at the scene at that time.

He said the accused person went into hiding at Gbegbese, a suburb of Accra and through intelligence gathered he was arrested at his hideout with the handcuff removed from his hand.
