Lack of expertise hindering productivity

Cape-Coast, July 15, GNA - The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape-Coast (UCC), the Reverend Professor Emmanuel Adow Obeng, on Saturday noted that many organisations and establishments in the country are operating under capacity because of inadequate requisite managerial skills.

He pointed out that there was the need to have personnel who "can strategically think and lead corporations to fully maximize the use of their resources for phenomenal growth".

Rev Obeng stated this at the matriculation of 163 senior and middle level mangers pursuing a two-year Post Graduate Diploma and a three-year Masters Degree in Organizational Development (OD). The programme being run by the UCC in collaboration with the Organization Capacity Improvement Consultant (OCIC) of the United Kingdom to promote institutional capacity building is the first of its kind in Africa.

He noted that few organisations in Africa apart from South Africa used the concept of organization development to achieve and sustain competitiveness.

The Vice Chancellor said this problem had resulted in lack of experts in that field forcing African countries to depend on foreign consultants, who end up taking the greatest portion of grants or loans for projects as remuneration.

He underscored the relevance of Organisational Development to ensure accelerated growth and urged workers to eschew self-centredness and build their capacity to maximize the growth of their organizations. Prof Obeng pointed out that the benefit of the programme were immense and appealed to organisations to take advantage and send their personnel in strategic positions to undertake the programme to uplift their institutions.

He said the UCC was determined to ensure the success of the programme through distance learning education and assured institutions and organisations with staff on the programme that they would soon experience remarkable improvement in their operations.
