Land guards on rampage at Dzorwulu

There was consternation galore at North Dzorwulu, a suburb of Accra on November 24, 2013, when a group of land-guards armed to the teeth, with impunity, went vandalizing properties of Ghana Export Promotion Council in the wee hours of that morning.

The incident which occurred at the craft village, about fifty metres away from the Military Dog Training School behind the magnificent Tullow Oil Office building along the George Walker Bush N1 Highway, saw the group of young men numbering about twenty, destroy properties belonging to the Council worth several thousands of Ghana Cedis.

The Informer has learnt that the thugs who vandalized the export promotion council properties were hired to the scene by one Yaw Bandaka of Super Building Construction.

Mr. Bandaka is said to be fighting the management of Department of Rural Housing under the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, over the said parcels of land in the area.

An eyewitness told The Informer that thugs wielding cudgels, sledge hammers and crowbars drove in a Toyota Camry saloon car with registration number GR 2630 12 and a Mercedes Benz 4x4 (ML) with registration number GW 707 X, went terrorizing the occupants of the building and vandalizing the items belonging to the Ghana Export Promotion Council.

The source says the said parcel of land which stretches to about 1.57 acres belonging to the Department of Rural Housing, has been rented out to the craftsmen of the Ghana Export Promotion Council who had been occupying the said property since 1995.

The paper further uncovered that the self-styled owner of the land, Yaw Bandaka, who is fronting for Super Building Construction Limited, is claiming he bought the said land from the Lands Commission at the cost of twenty-Four thousand Ghana Cedis in 2011.

A claim Madam Deborah A. Kuwornu, the Acting Director of Department of Rural Housing, the original owners, has vehemently disputed.

She argued that there is no letter emanating from the Lands Commission to the effect that the said land has been sold and bought by the said individual on the table of the department.

Even though Madam Kuwornu disputed the claims of the self-styled owner of the land, she directed this reporter to seek further clearance from the Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Mr. Samson Ahi.

She told this reporter that the incident has been reported to the Ministry.

However, The Informer has learnt that there are elements at the Lands Commission who are waiting to cash in on the situation to sell the land.

On the account above, we are humbly calling on the agencies of state particularly the National Security and Police, to have the incident investigated and have the perpetrators of the said act punished.
