Lands ministry considers review of NAIMOS operations after fatal accident

The Director of Public Relations at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Mawusi Ama Mawuenyefia, has stated that the Ministry may review the operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) as part of efforts to enhance safety and improve the team’s operational efficiency.

The move follows a tragic accident involving a NAIMOS team, which resulted in the death of a military officer.

In an interview on Citi FM, monitored by GhanaWeb on Friday, November 21, 2025, she explained that the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has stressed the need for a review of their operations in the wake of the accident.

“The Minister has mentioned that we are going to look at it. We are going to review. For now, the cause is an accident; we do not suspect any foul play. Today, when the Minister met with the team, he mentioned that we probably need to review the modus operandi, so that is going to be done,” she stated.

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, the NAIMOS team was involved in an accident while returning to Obuasi after an operation at a concession in Anyankyerim.

According to the eyewitnesses, the vehicle somersaulted between the Anyankyerim community and the Airport Road.

The accident resulted in the death of a military officer, and four other officers who sustained critical injuries are receiving treatment at the Anglogold Obuasi Hospital.
