Large turn up at La-Nkwantanang for clean up

Residents within the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (La-NMMA) turned up in their numbers to take part in the National Clean-up Exercise.

The clean-up saw the Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon Alhaji Sorogoh, the Madina Municipal Chief Executive Mr. Franklin Anku, the entire management and staff of the La-NMMA, NADMO staff and the residents of La-Nkwantanang-Madina taking part in the exercise.

The Municipal Environmental Officer for La-NMMA, Mr. Joseph Quacoe told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the six hour cleanup exercise involved the staff of NADMO, Market Women, traders, who sell alongside the main streets of Madina, and the staff of Barron Distilleries, led by its Operations Manager Mr. Francis Quansah, and the Ghana National Fire Service branch in Redco Madina.

The La-NMMA hired tipper trucks, wheelbarrows, broomsticks, wellington boots, Hand-gloves, shovels, excavators and payloaders to undertake the exercise, which saw the volunteers clearing chocked gutters.

A few shop owners who failed to take part in the exercise and opened their shops were confronted by the La-NMMA task force, who locked up their stores with padlocks and forced them to join the exercise.

The Member of Parliament for Madina, the Municipal Chief Executive and the Press drove through the township to observe and participate in the exercise.

Some of the areas visited included Social Welfare area, Zongo Junction, Madina-Zongo Zurak Park, Ayimensah, Otinibi, Kweimang, Adoteimang, and part of Amrahia, all within the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly.

Speaking to GNA, Alhaji Sorogoh said the exercise was a success, and that, Ghanaians should not wait for the president to appeal to them to clean their environment, and urged them to inculcate the spirit of voluntarism.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Franklin Anku, warned persons, who litter the streets with water sachet to stop the practice immediately or else would be prosecuted, adding that, the Assembly will continue reminding residents to keep their environment clean.

He regretted that the Drivers Unions failed to take part in the exercise.
