?Alan K Smells Rat

Mr. Alan Kyerematen, an NPP presidential aspirant has said he has ?strong reservation about how proceedings of the Vetting Committee, supposed to have been held in-camera were leaked to the media?.

In a press release yesterday, Mr. Kyeremateng said he has written to the Chairman of the Committee to express his deep concern about the matter. ?Hope that they will deal with it appropriately?, he said.

It?s reported in sections of the media that Mr. Alan Kyerematen had hot exchanges with a member of the vetting committee, Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey, on his founding member status during his vetting last week.

Mr. Alan Kyerematen?s release said, ??my credentials in the party since 1992 is well known? having been a member of the National Executive Committee of the party since its establishment in 1992 and also Chairman of the Young Executive Forum.?

This same group, he said, ?has produced seven (7) leading Cabinet Ministers in the current government as well as the National Chairman of the NPP?.

He said, ?I am the only one amongst the current crop of candidates vying for the flagbearership of the party who was acknowledged as one of the presidential hopefuls with potential in the 1996 NPP leadership contest.?

A member of Mr. Kyerematen?s campaign team, who wants to remain anonymous, told ADM in a telephone interview after the press release was sent that Alan?s camp is not perturbed about the recent propaganda against him in the media. ?He is the leading candidate now?And occasionally you will become the target of these negative propaganda?, he said.

He revealed that Mr. Alan Kyerematen first nursed his presidential ambition in 1996, ?but was told by some leaders in the party to take his time?.

Giving out some details about the vetting, he said the Committee told Alan to provide his original founding member certificate after he had provided a photocopy. ?And between you and me, you know that from 1992 to now is a long time and how many people can keep such records?, he said.

He noted that Mr. Alan Kyerematen provided documentary evidence of a receipt paid as founding member fees. ?There is no dispute about his founding membership?.

When asked if someone should be disqualified as an aspirant if he lies to the committee about his status, the he said, ?if you are not a founding member and you make a representation that you are a founding member, you should be disqualified?.

Question: Do you think that being a chairman of the Young Executive Forum makes Alan Kyerematen a founding member of the NPP?

Answer: Alan was there when the party was formed and that is why he was made to head that group.

He said Alan Cash, as the aspirant is (un)popularly called is now in Northern Ghana and ?I can assure you that we are really leading?.

The NPP succession programme has so far been beset by bad blood, suspicions, innuendo and sabotage.

Two attempts by President Kufuor to bring the flock together have ended inconclusively, with some insiders even suggesting that the president?s well-meaning initiative rather entrenched positions of suspicion and mistrust.

And now the vetting exercise, which is meant to give the succession programme a stamp of approval is itself running into problems of credibility.

Vice President Aliu Mahama meets the committee today.
