The Ga-Dangme Council of Wulomei (High Priest) is urging the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa to learn from the examples of her predecessors especially Kwadwo Afari-Gyan who had one time held the position to an enviable end.
According to the High Priests, persons like Joyce Aryee a female and VCRAC Crabbe have also demonstrated exemplary leadership in their fields of endeavors to ensure peace reigned and therefore she should take inspiration from them.
At a press conference in Accra, Numo Noi Osekan Kpeneku II, the Osu Klottey Wulomo, who spoke on behalf of the high priests, said: “fathers and custodians of our people’s lives will never forgive you if you place our lives in a gamble against the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic.”
“We have observed with keen concern since you announced to the Ghanaian public in 2019 to procure a new BVM System, the heated arguments between you and the stakeholder parties. We are mindful also of the ever-rising tension this idea of yours has created amongst Ghanaians and in almost every household in Ghana. We are also aware of the fact that such heat before any political election is not a comfortable presage for the peace of the country and we gear for our country Ghana.
He added that, “We shall call ourselves ordinary because we are not politicians but at least we are aware of the Supreme Court ruling in the eight months long case in the last election between NDC and NPP over the same ‘bloated Election register.’ In our contention, the Supreme Court turned down an argument of a supposed bloated register which was tagged with 76, 000 Togolese names.”
Validity
Concerning the validity of the existing voter register, he asked “Is it not this same register now in contention which the Supreme Court ruled that it has been used to validate the election of John Mahama? Was it changed in 2016 to validate the election of Akufo’s victory?”
He added that “This same register had been used several times in various elections peaceably.”
Numo Kpeneku, the Osu Klottey Wulomo stated that, since the appointment of Mrs Jean Adukwei Mensa, as the electoral commissioner on June 23, 2018, she has “used this so-called ‘wasteful’ register on three successive occasions satisfactorily. All Ghanaian and party stakeholders accepted the outcomes of those elections and the referendum.”
“We as priests have not seen any evidence which apparently suggests a flaw in the register as you claim. As much as we are not lawyers and politicians, we shall only oblige ourselves to moral common sense to ask you these very simple questions.
Deliberate
The Council of Wulomei said “We believe you have deliberately refused to accept constructive deliberation and consensus building for an agenda which is known surreptitiously only to you and your deputies.
“This we believe if you are not cautioned may plunge our dear country into an inevitable blood bath as the majority of the public seems to go contrary to your ideals. We wish to remind you that as much as you are not the Registrar of Birth and Deaths; and also not the final law in Ghana the eligibility of who is Ghanaian is outside your purview.”
According to them, “it would be suicidal for our dear country if you remain obstinate in the face of all the admonishing from so many well-meaning Ghanaians and institutions.
“We, therefore, ask you to exercise extreme cautions so as not to violate important constitutional provisions and avoid truncating the enviable progress Ghana has chalked In the building of our democracy in the past for decades.
“We further wish to remind you that in the Biometric Voters register leading to the 2012 elections conductive compromises were made while the entrenched position was relaxed by stakeholders to make the process free from strangulation and intimidation.
“Your stance in this year’s electoral processes makes no sense to us; because the very invalid register you condemn is that same register that brought Nana Akufo-Addo and the parliamentarians to power. By your principles, we shall not be wrong to say that the equation, therefore, disqualifies all of them validly.
They further urged “loosen your hold on the laws that could possibly wreck our dear country and attend to humane reasoning and save us from unwanted civil insurrection.”
