Lebanese Embassy marks 75th independence anniversary

The Lebanese Embassy in Ghana has marked its 75th independence anniversary celebration with a befitting and colourful reception at the residence in Accra.

The three-hour big ceremony, spiced with a cultural performance and musical interludes attracted Lebanese nationals, Ghanaians as well as government officials.

Newly-appointed Lebanese ambassador to Ghana, Mr Maher Kheir in the address pointed out that “On this occasion, we value how priceless freedom is. The Lebanese people laid their lives in the process, faced deep confrontations, and they are always ready to defend the sovereignty and freedom of Lebanon. The struggle is not yet over.

“In this inflamed region, we had our fair share of troubles, however, we stood up against all coming risks: such as the acts of terrorism that affected our country in the last period of time, but through endless sacrifice, Lebanon kept its dignity and pride.

“Our President, H.E Gen. Michel Aoun has always called for support from the international community to end this crisis.

“History witnesses that Lebanon is a country of pluralism, peace and tolerance. Those are common values we share with Ghana.

Both countries have a flourishing relationship, transcending diplomacy.

“For over a century our people continue to be part of Ghanaian Society.”

He added that “Since 1978, Ghana still send troops to UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.

“Also, Lebanon has been one of the first countries to open an embassy in Accra, after Ghana’s independence in 1957.

We will also have ongoing support for Ghana in many fields, whenever possible.”

He mentioned that the Lebanese Community has so far, awarded one hundred scholarships to students in various Universities in the country, as well as dependents of martyrs of UNIFIL.

HE Kheir commended president Akufo-Addo for his commitment to improve the lives of his citizens, such as: The Government’s flagship program, One district one factory initiative, Planting for food and jobs and Free senior high school policy which has given more than two hundred thousand teenagers an opportunity to get senior high education, are admirable.

A government official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration who joined in the anniversary celebration commended the Lebanese Ambassador for their immense contribution to the socio-economic development of Ghana.

A special anniversary cake was cut as part of activities on the colourful evening.
