The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) met the
vice chancellors and Principals last week to find out whether the committee had the mandate to negotiate with the lecturers.
The move was to ensure that whatever decisions arrived at during the negotiations will not be reverted. Mr D. K. Shadow, President of the association said in an interview that actual negotiation will start after a solution has been found at the meeting.
"As far as UTAG is concerned, whatever discussions that had gone on in the past few days are not part of the negotiations" he said. He explained that what the Education Ministry has agreed upon as formalised channels are that UTAG should negotiate with the CVCP, if there is any problem it should then move to the university councils and if the problems are not resolved it should go to the National Council on Tertiary Education.
UTAG considers this channel of communication as cumbersome and so will seek how best an acceptable method could be fashioned out.
