Legon NPP condemns educational crisis

Accra, Sept 7, GNA - The Legon branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Tuesday condemned the flexible terms of payment as proposed by the government in the handling of current crisis in the country's tertiary institutions.

''We of the NPP, join the students to condemn the so-called flexible terms of payment which we were made to sign under duress because students find it almost impossible to pay any additional fees,'' a statement signed in Accra by Mohammed Tijani, General secretary of the party branch said.

The statement said it is unfortunate that government has taken short term measures which rather tend to deepen educational crisis, adding that the three million cedis allocated as Needy Students Fund is "unacceptable, inadequate and a mere calculated attempt to throw dust in the eyes of Ghanaians''.

It said the majority of students will find life on campus extremely difficult and would have to borrow to pay for the 50 per cent asked by the school authorities.

The branch called on government to take positive steps in order to achieve a smooth running of the academic calendar adding that suggestions proposed by student leaders should be taken seriously.

'' The proposed National Forum on Tertiary Education, should as a matter of urgency, come out with acceptable and permanent solutions to the problem.''
