Students of the University of Ghana (UG), Legon, owed the university about ?10 billion in unpaid fees as at the close of the last academic year.
These arrears represent over 50 per cent of the total amount of money the student population owes UG.
This was announced by the interim President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Ms. Josephine Adwoa Ashia, at a news conference at Legon, Accra. Ms Ashia called the news conference to express students? views on the proposals by the University Authorities to increase fees by 100 per cent from next academic year and to introduce an ?in-out-out-in? residential policy. Under the new residential policy, only students in the first and final years of their courses will be provided with on-campus accommodation.
Ms. Ashia said that students objected lately to the proposed fee increase. She called on the University Authorities to return to the negotiating table for a reconsideration of certain items in the proposed fee build-up, saying this would enable students and authorities to arrive at ?on affirmable and acceptable figure.?
