Ghanaian Reggae musician Blakk Rasta has voiced his support for the New Ghana Social Justice Forum's petition to exclude rapper Sarkodie from the list of performers at the Africa Fan Zone event in France.

The petition, submitted to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee, cites Sarkodie's alleged misogynistic lyrics and recent controversies as reasons for his exclusion from the event.

Reacting to this development on his Black Pot show on July 26, 2024, Blakk Rasta emphasised the need for celebrities to be responsible role models, noting that their actions and words influence many people.

"We need some of these measures to be able to make some of our so-called celebrities responsible. This will teach a lot of us to be very careful how we speak. Sarkodie exhibited a lot of arrogance and when I speak like this then people will send me messages asking if I have a problem with Sarkodie," he stated.

He also addressed Sarkodie's recent conflict with actress Yvonne Nelson, who claimed in her memoir that the rapper forced her to have an abortion.

Blakk Rasta condemned Sarkodie's response to the memoir, describing it as arrogant and disrespectful.

"You didn't care and when she finally put it out in a book, you have the arrogance, the tenacity to release a certain trash song called 'Try Me' calling her a call girl, a street girl," he said.

Blakk Rasta called for stricter measures to hold celebrities accountable, stating that such actions would teach artistes to be more mindful of their words and actions.

He urged that Sarkodie and other artistes who have behaved similarly should face consequences, stating that no one is above the truth.

"This group should have done this earlier. We need to check some of these things or else at the end of the day, we would only be degrading ourselves and each other. Let Sarkodie face the music. Let other artistes who have gone down that line also go through it. Nobody is bigger than the truth," he said.

Background

The New Ghana Social Justice Forum, petitioned the French National Olympic and Sports Committee and the organisers of the Africa Fan Zone event to exclude rapper Sarkodie from performing.

Sarkodie is scheduled to perform on August 9 at the Africa Fan Zone, an independent cultural event coinciding with the Olympic Games.

The group claims that Sarkodie is "misogynistic," citing lyrics from the song "Jennifer Lomotey," where he references a folklore about Krobo women and promiscuity.

They also referenced his recent conflict with actress Yvonne Nelson, who alleged in her memoir that Sarkodie forced her to abort a pregnancy.

The group argues that honouring Sarkodie with a performance platform is concerning, especially for pregnant women, due to his past actions and statements.
