‘Let’s set up plastic buyers’ scheme’

Progressive People's Party (PPP) chairman for Ablekuma North Constituency of the Greater Accra region, Mr. John Gomez, has advocated for the immediate establishment of a nationwide comprehensive licensed plastic buyers’ scheme. According to the PPP chair, the establishment of such a scheme will enable recognised individuals and organisations to buy plastics for re-cycling. Speaking in an interview with Today during the water and sanitation workshop organised by CHAMA Group Ghana Limited and Bentley Systems International in Accra recently, Mr. Gomez noted that the establishment of a licensed plastic buyers’ scheme would go a long way to create employment for the youth in the country.

The workshop discussed challenges facing water and sanitation in Ghana. The PPP chairman lamented that flooding and sanitation were causing a lot of problems in the country underscoring the need for a holistic approach to tackle the issue.

Mr. Gomez minced no words when he called for a ban on plastics in the system.

He explained that among the millennium development goals, the country had performed badly in the area of sanitation, adding that the workshop would be used as an advocacy tool on sanitation and water.

To this end, the PPP Ablekuma North constituency chairman called for the re-introduction of the public health nurses in communities to keep up with the awareness education on the dangers of water and sanitation.

He said government, through the city authorities, needed to, as a matter of urgency, enforce the by-laws on sanitation to keep the environment clean for a healthy nation. The PPP chair went on to emphasise that issues on sanitation should not be handled along political lines, adding “we are tired of making everything political in this country, including water and sanitation."
