Let us allow State institutions to function - NUGS

Accra, Sept. 21, GNA - The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Wednesday called on civil societies, democratic institutions and the citizenry to remain calm, resolute and allow the due process and institutions of state to function efficiently and effectively. It therefore, condemned the pre-mature and prejudiced call for the resignation of Dr Richard Winfred Anane, Minister of Transportation, when the due process was being followed on the recommendations of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). The call was made in a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Fred Abogo, Coordinating Secretary and Mr Abdulai A. Rahaman, Press and Information Secretary.

It said the union upheld the principle of rule of law and respected the institutions of state in a democratic dispensation and believed that no citizen was above the law.

The statement said 'The union is particularly dismayed about the call for the resignation of Dr Anane when he is challenging the findings of CHRAJ and especially when President John Agyekum Kufuor has directed the Attorney General to critically study the report and advice Government.'

It said 'In our attempt to check public officers, we should not get into the temptation of trampling on their fundamental human rights, unfairly damage their hard won reputation and bring their integrity into disrepute
