Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, on Christmas day called on Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of reaching out to the less privileged in society.

He said the act of showing love during the Christmas season, in the form of gifts, should be simple and moderate devoid of intimidation, discrimination and giving out permanently as God directs.

Most Rev. Agyenta made the call in a sermon at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Bolgatanga as part of his Christmas message to the Christian fraternity.

He said Christmas was a period of giving and showing love, so it was imperative for Ghanaians, especially Christians, to reach out to the vulnerable and neglected during this season however, it must not be done in a manner that is not Christian.

The Bishop said God was the greatest giver and gives out in a simple and moderate manner in order for all Christians to emulate.

Backing his call with scripture, the Bishop explained that God gave His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to humanity.

“This is the greatest of all gifts, who became the saviour of the world, someone who rescues us from danger, someone who rescues us from peril, someone who above all gives life”.

“So if we are thinking about Christmas, which is the season of giving, it is important to understand that the one who inspires gifts, the one who actually inspires this spirit of sharing is God Himself,” Most Rev. Agyenta added.

He indicated that in as much as Christians may want to give, it should not be compulsory nor compel one to employ dubious means to acquire wealth so as to share.

“When you want to share with the poor, the gifts should be very valuable and not surplus, do not share what you no longer need, share what is precious to you, what you treasure, to actually reflect the value of God’s spirit of sharing”.
